CBBC'southward Wolfblood is currently in its fourth yr – only things are rather different this season. The show follows Jana equally she enters an urban surround – not necessarily a comfy place for wolves… Creator Debbie Moon explains to Paul Simpson how and why the show has changed.

I hesitate to call the fourth flavour more grown-up, but it certainly does feel a more than mature series…

How early in the prep for season 4 were you aware that you were basically force majeure in terms of the changes?

The story of you seeing the two words in a bookshop have become part of Wolfblood lore, merely when you were developing the series, were you looking at it every bit something that could run four or 5 years, or were you simply concentrating on that first season?
Really we were concentrating on the showtime season. Of course CBBC is always looking for ideas that will run longer and take off, but I don't think anyone predictable that it would be equally popular as information technology is at that phase.
When you lot're working on a season of a show, you're always trying to get that season every bit good as y'all possibly tin can and leave a few loose threads in case you come back for another flavor, but information technology'southward got to be about the work in front of you actually.
With earlier seasons, were you aware of renewal while you were shooting?

How hands-on are you in terms of other people's scripts on the show?

We accept a script editor who works with them to get the best out of their script, then I've not had to do any major rewriting or anything of that sort.

We have writers who are very proficient at the humorous episodes; my episodes tend to take a few funny lines in but there are writers who write lighter episodes. When Kurti & Doyle were onboard in season 2, they did a wonderful episode that was basically a haunted house mystery, which is non something we'd e'er done earlier, and it was actually nice to stretch the format a little scrap. If I'd been writing the prove that would never have occurred to me.
How much of the world in the fashion you've expanded it did you lot take at the dorsum of your heed originally, or were y'all just looking at how it afflicted the original characters?

I think that's quite a resonant story to exist told for children – your experiences have validity even if nobody else believes you. And of course Rhydian as the foster kid looking for a home – the prove'due south very much about finding your tribe, really, finding the place that you fit in. In terms of practicalities, how has going from a country village to an urban environment changed product this year?
Information technology'south been quite a claiming for everyone, obviously, and the government in Newcastle have been fantastic. Our location manager has gone off and asked, "Can we close that span for 3 hours?" And they say, sure. They've been very cooperative.
It's been an interesting challenge for everyone to exit and find those locations that gave us that sense of scale and also the sense of there being wild ideas within the city, which is something that's ever fascinated me – the waste material ground within cities. I think they've done a great job with that.
In terms of the writing, it's presented new story possibilities, but are there stories that you at present can't tell considering you're no longer in the minor community surround?
I suppose one time it becomes on a slightly larger scale, it becomes not and so much about interacting with your immediate family and neighbours, only interacting with a larger community. Those kinds of stories are dissimilar in terms of interaction with people. It's more than near existence stuck in the middle of large numbers of humans and how they react to that.
Big fish in a small pond then a small-scale fish in a very big one – something kids have, moving from junior into secondary school: there's a disconnect at that indicate.
I recall there are a lot of these types of transitions in childhood. It's nice for us to be able to explore those, going into a new state of affairs that'due south unsettling.
You've changed effects houses for series 4; has that been a smooth transition?
